Topic: 40 YEARS A PCP:  WHO KNEW IT WAS SO COMPLICATED

  • A presentation of mega trends and changes to the healthcare system over the past 40 years
  • What’s good/what’s bad about the changes?
  • Where do we go from here?
  • What are the challenges and opportunities facing the physician and office managers?

Speaker: Dr. Jeffrey Steinbauer, Chief Medical Officer of CHI Texas Division Health Network & Medical Director of the BCM Corporate Care

Jeffrey SteinbauerDr. Steinbauer is a professor of Family and Community Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine.  He has been with Baylor for 19 years.

His initial career goals included becoming a professional jazz musician, which led him to live in Las Vegas where he started college.  He soon realized there were far better players and the future as a professional musician was unlikely.  Enduring that realization, he began pursuing a career in medicine; finishing his undergraduate degree at Kansas State and obtaining his MD at the University of Kansas in 1977.  He completed residency in Family Medicine in Wichita Kansas.

He practiced in a small, rural Kansas town for several years, doing all the things a “country doctor” is known for, including receiving payment in the form of rather delicious farm produce.  His attraction to academics led him to join the faculty at the University of Oklahoma, and from there he has also held appointments at UTMB in Galveston, and the Blackstock Program (now Dell Medical School) in Austin.

His interests have included:  team care; family therapy and family medicine; rehabilitation; chronic disease; resident education; electronic health records and administrative medicine.  He’s been a full-time physician, residency director, vice chairman, clinic medical director, CMIO and was the first CMO for Baylor Clinic in 2004.  He currently still sees patients and serves as director of the BCM Corporate Care program in addition to being the CMO for the CHI Texas Division Health Network.
