Practice Administrator
U.S. Oncology
Midland/Odessa, Texas

The Rottman Group has been retained to find a Practice Administrator for an 8 physician, two-location practice in Midland & Odessa, TX.  This practice is component of TOPA (Texas Oncology, P.A.) and on a larger scale part of U.S. Oncology.

The Opportunity

There are three medical oncologists and one radiation oncologist in each location.  Both are affiliated and on a hospital campus.  Midland has had this relationship for some time; Odessa will be moving into a brand new office on the hospital campus at the beginning of 2003.  Though the physicians take call and cover for each other, they keep separate practices.

There are no other oncologists in the Midland/Odessa market.  Thus, this is not as much a business development role, but rather one of operational management and people leadership.  There are opportunities to improve patient flow, the practice operations.  This person also needs to be attuned to the relationship development with the hospital leadership at each campus.

There is ample investment in capital equipment in both locations.  Midland is replacing their linear accelerator.  All of the equipment will be new in Odessa where they will also be doing IMRT (Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy).  They also enroll approximately 50 patients per year in clinical research programs here.

Operationally, they used to have CBO that took care of their billing with TOPA.  They took this over in January of 2001 and their days in A/R have dropped from 90 to less than 50 now.  They currently use PsiMed information system.  There are approximately 34 FTEs in Odessa, 41 in Midland.  Reporting to the Practice Administrator would be:  a clinical manager from each location, business office manager, lab manager, pharmacist, physicist, and social worker.  There is currently a retail pharmacy in Midland with the opportunity to develop this service in Odessa.  Between the two locations there are approximately 50,000 square feet of operation.

They see 10+ new patients per day and have over $40M in gross charges annually.  There are 76 employees between the two practices.

This person will give operational development and leadership of this organization.  They will be instrumental in relationship development within the medical community.  There is an opportunity to expand the scope of both services and operation.

Within U.S. Oncology there is the opportunity for career development not found in stand-alone practices.  U.S. Oncology is the nations largest health-care services network devoted exclusively to cancer treatment and research, and a pioneer in community-based cancer care since 1993.  Currently there is a network of over 850 affiliated physicians who deliver care to over a half million cancer patients each year, serving more cancer patients than any other single healthcare organization in America.  U.S. Oncology has over 450 sites of service, including 77 cancer centers in 28 states.
